Java Concurrency With Project Loom

The project is currently in the final stages of development and is planned to be released as a preview feature with JDK19. Project Loom is certainly a game-changing feature from Java so far. This new lightweight concurrency model supports high throughput and aims to make it easier for Java coders to write, debug, and maintain concurrent Java applications.

A kernel thread is something that is actually scheduled by your operating system. I will stick to Linux, because that’s probably what you use in production. For example, when a kernel thread runs for too long, it will be preempted so that other threads can take over. It more or less voluntarily can give up the CPU and other threads may use that CPU.

New methods in Thread Class

In any way, don’t start a project using a Reactive framework but blocking inside Reactive code just because you are using Loom’s virtual threads. Instead, either choose the Reactive programming style or use virtual threads and write it synchronously. If you have specific work that should be done in a platform thread (e.g. CPU-intensive work), nothing stops you from creating a platform thread for that.

Essentially, what we do is that we just create an object of type thread, we parse in a piece of code. When we start such a thread here on line two, this thread will run somewhere in the background. The virtual machine will make sure that our current flow of execution can continue, loom java but this separate thread actually runs somewhere. At this point in time, we have two separate execution paths running at the same time, concurrently. It essentially means that we are waiting for this background task to finish. Typically, we want two things to run concurrently.

More from Oskar

Launching 9000 platform threads didn’t really show much difference, the run time was the same, but one million threads test took eleven seconds (11s) which is more than double the time compared to virtual threads. This article discusses the problems in Java’s current concurrency model and how the Java project Loom aims to change them. We also explored the tasks and schedulers in threads and how Fibers Class and pluggable user-mode schedulers can be an excellent alternative for traditional threads in Java. A thread supports the concurrent execution of instructions in modern high-level programming languages and operating systems. Each thread has a separate flow of execution, and multiple threads are used to execute different parts of a task simultaneously.

Then we move on, and in line five, we run the continuation once again. Not really, it will jump straight to line 17, which essentially means we are continuing from the place we left off. Also, it means we can take any piece of code, it could be running a loop, it could be doing some recursive function, whatever, and we can all the time and every time we want, we can suspend it, and then bring it back to life. Continuations are actually useful, even without multi-threading. The structured concurrency API is also designed to preserve order in multi-threaded environments by treating multiple tasks running in individual threads as a single logical unit of work.

Required Materials to make a Loom

The good times we got without messing with thread priority are almost kept but .. We could call the previously defined process function directly, but for the sake of clarity, and reduce the number of instanciations gap between the https://www.globalcloudteam.com/ different scenario, we will create the Runnable version of the origami task. There is a need to manually enable experimental features in the project’s project language level, and this is done as shown in the screenshot below.

On newer Java versions, even thread names are visible to your Linux operating system. Even more interestingly, from the kernel point of view, there is no such thing as a thread versus process. This is just a basic unit of scheduling in the operating system. The only difference between them is just a single flag, when you’re creating a thread rather than a process. When you’re creating a new thread, it shares the same memory with the parent thread. It’s just a matter of a single bit when choosing between them.

So in a thread-per-request model, the throughput will be limited by the number of OS threads available, which depends on the number of physical cores/threads available on the hardware. To work around this, you have to use shared thread pools or asynchronous concurrency, both of which have their drawbacks. Thread pools have many limitations, like thread leaking, deadlocks, resource thrashing, etc. Asynchronous concurrency means you must adapt to a more complex programming style and handle data races carefully. There are also chances for memory leaks, thread locking, etc.

  • These two were marginally changed from their first appearance in Java 19 few months back, hence the content below is mostly the same as my last years Java 19 overview.
  • Why go to this trouble, instead of just adopting something like ReactiveX at the language level?
  • Technically, you can have millions of virtual threads that are sleeping without really paying that much in terms of the memory consumption.
  • Project Loom offers a much-suited solution for such situations.
  • In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid.

This is the first design difference that Scoped Values made — they make the data immutable, set only once and are read-only afterwards. To cut a long story short, your file access call inside the virtual thread, will actually be delegated to a (….drum roll….) good-old operating system thread, to give you the illusion of non-blocking file access. Fiber class would wrap the tasks in an internal user-mode continuation.

When to choose or avoid virtual threads

Continuation is a programming construct that was put into the JVM, at the very heart of the JVM. There are actually similar concepts in different languages. Continuation, the software construct is the thing that allows multiple virtual threads to seamlessly run on very few carrier threads, the ones that are actually operated by your Linux system. I will not go into the API too much because it’s subject to change.

loom java

However, if I now run the continuation, so if I call run on that object, I will go into foo function, and it will continue running. It runs the first line, and then goes to bar method, it goes to bar function, it continues running. Then on line 16, something really exciting and interesting happens. The function bar voluntarily says it would like to suspend itself. The code says that it no longer wishes to run for some bizarre reason, it no longer wishes to use the CPU, the carrier thread. What happens now is that we jump directly back to line four, as if it was an exception of some kind.

For example, data store drivers can be more easily transitioned to the new model. Java has had good multi-threading and concurrency capabilities from early on in its evolution and can effectively utilize multi-threaded and multi-core CPUs. Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1 had basic support for platform threads (or Operating System (OS) threads), and JDK 1.5 had more utilities and updates to improve concurrency and multi-threading. JDK 8 brought asynchronous programming support and more concurrency improvements.
